1961-1964

Briefing books, cablegrams, correspondence, memoranda, newsclips, photographs, postcards, schedules scrapbooks, transcripts, and travel expenses. Robert F. Kennedy made four major trips while Attorney General:.an official visit to the Ivory Coast for the first anniversary of its independence, 8/1961; a good will trip to the Far East and Europe, 2/1962; a diplomatic mission to the Far East, 1/1964; and a personal trip to Germany and Poland, 6/1964. There are also various folders on domestic trips (6/1962, 9/1963, and 12/1963) and on a trip to Canada (4/1964). The trip to the Far East in 1964 grew out of the good relations Robert Kennedy had established with President Sukarno in 1962. President Johnson asked the Attorney General to return to Djakarta to try to mediate the dispute between The Netherlands and Indonesia over West New Guinea (West Irian), a territory whose status had been unclear since Indonesian independence in 1949. The trip to Germany and Poland was a personal trip to dedicate a memorial to President Kennedy in Berlin and to visit Poland, a country that members of the Kennedy Family had been visiting since the 1930's. Material from the various trips is disproportionate with a 12 box from the Ivory Coast visit, 13.5 boxes from the 1962 Good Will Trip, 1 box from the 1964 Far East mission, and 1.5 boxes from the German/Polish Trip. For additional and related materials, see the Attorney General's General Correspondence.
